During the summer Coimbra can be very hot, so be prepared with water, sun protection and comfortable shoes.
In the event of rain, don’t forget some protection as there are no sheltered areas along many parts of the route
The route takes you up the hillside, part of which is made up of stairs (around 40 steps).
The stairs have handrails.
Visiting the old Jewish quarter involves climbing up a 20-meter slope. For this reason, consider your physical condition.
What to expect
Short guided tour of the exhibition “The Jews of Coimbra” with an introduction to the Jewish presence in Portugal and Coimbra, as well as their persecution
Visit to the remaining spaces of the Inquisition court in Coimbra.
Walking tour on the area of the Old Jewish Quarter
Visit to other sites, such as the Praça do Comércio (where autos da fé were held), the Fonte Nova (an old Jewish fountain) and the New Jewish Quarter.
The tour is not about this
Most of the spaces related to the Jewish presence in the city have been destroyed, have an uncertain location or are not open to the public (as in the case of the Mikveh).
On this tour, you’ll learn more about Jewish heritage and the memory of certain places and not so much the material proofs of that heritage.
For this reason, don’t expect to visit physical spaces like the old synagogue or the old Jewish cemetery as you can find in other cities.
